After writing my post yesterday about missing certain aspects of my jailbroken 1.1.4 iPhone, I decided to give the iPhone Dev Team’s new Pwnage 2.0.1 application a go. I’m pleased to announce that thanks to this great little application, my first generation (G2) iPhone using firmware 2.0 is now jailbroken.

iPhone 2.0 jailbrokenThe screenshot to the left shows a few ‘new’ non-App store applications, namely Cydia, NES and Poof.

Cydia has basically replaced the Installer.app (currently the original and much loved Installer.app hasn’t been ported for 2.0). The NES app is a Nintendo Emulator and is great for the those old games such as Super Mario Bros. And don’t you hate having all those unwanted apps cluttering up your springboard? Using the Poof app you can simply make them ‘disappear’.

Having sifted through the file repositories in Cydia, it is clear that most of the original applications for jailbroken phones and touches have not been ported (yet) - developers need to hurry up and get Summerboard sorted, hint hint! I’m already bored with the boring black desktop on my iphone…

However you’ll be pleased to know there are a wealth of ‘tech’ apps available via Cydia including the very important OpenSSH Access client. This will allow you to access the file system of your iPhone using an FTP client.

How do I jailbreak my iPhone?

1. Simply grab yourself a copy of the Pwnage 2.0.1 tool here.
2. Upzip the package, and run the Pwnage application.

3. Simply select your iPhone model and follow the steps the application provides.
4. 30 odd minutes later you should be enjoying your jailbroken iPhone… simple wasn’t it…

…but beware these are the steps I followed it worked great for me - your results however may vary, so ‘freeing’ your iPhone is solely at your own discretion (yes, I’m warning you that if you brick your phone, it isn’t my fault!).

Will you be jailbreaking your iphone? Do you think it is still ‘necessary’ now with the App store?
